Lidl Gets Green Light for New Oxfordshire Store Amid 6,300 New Homes
Lidl Approved for New Store in Didcot, 40 Jobs Created

Lidl has received planning permission for a new store in Didcot, Oxfordshire, a town set to see 6,300 new homes built. The decision, made by South Oxfordshire District Council, comes after plans first submitted in 2024 faced 34 resident objections and initial opposition from Didcot Town Council over flood-risk concerns.

Objections Overcome

Residents had raised concerns about existing supermarket capacity, potential traffic increases, and more suitable locations. Didcot Town Council previously objected due to a lack of flood-risk mitigation measures, citing "several flooding incidents in the area, especially when the Marsh Bridge water pumps fail." However, the planning permission report confirmed that Lidl has addressed these issues, leading to council approval for the Abingdon Road site.

Site Redevelopment Benefits

Planning officers noted that the site, currently in a "dilapidated state," would be redeveloped, delivering a "substantial benefit" to the area. The report stated: "The proposals represent a significant improvement on the current underutilisation of the site and on its appearance. Given this, finding a viable use for the site is a clear benefit which I consider to be of substantial benefit."

Community and Economic Impact

Former Didcot mayor Mocky Khan supported the development, saying it would give residents "more choice, especially when you consider the cost of living environment we have at the moment." He added: "The town is growing with more new homes being built, and with more growth it's good to have a wide variety of supermarkets to fit all budgets."

Lidl confirmed the store will create 40 full-time equivalent roles, plus construction jobs. A spokesperson said: "We've seen demand for our affordable, high-quality products continue to rise in Oxfordshire, and we are committed to serving more communities in the area. Our new store will create around 40 new jobs and build on our continued growth. We're excited to be a step closer to opening this store and thank everyone who has supported us on our journey so far."

Three people wrote in support of the new Lidl, highlighting the benefits of a discount food store and new employment opportunities. The store follows the opening of Aldi in 2015 on Jubilee Way roundabout.
