A Virgin Atlantic flight bound for Jamaica was forced to make an emergency landing in Ireland after one of its engines failed mid-flight over the Atlantic Ocean. The incident occurred on Saturday as flight VS165 was en route from London Heathrow to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.
The aircraft, carrying 246 passengers and 13 crew members, departed London at 4:12pm and was nearly three hours into the journey when one of its engines shut down over the North Atlantic. With hours of open water ahead, the pilots decided to turn back to Europe, shutting down the problematic engine to prevent further damage.
The dual-engine aircraft continued with reduced performance, descending from 34,000 feet to a safer single-engine cruise altitude of 20,000 feet. Air traffic controllers guided the plane towards Shannon Airport on the west coast of Ireland, a key emergency diversion hub for transatlantic flights.
On the ground, large-scale emergency protocols were activated. Shannon Airport's Fire and Rescue Service deployed multiple crash tenders along the runway, while the National Ambulance Service, Gardaí, and units from the Clare County Fire and Rescue Service responded. The Irish Coast Guard was also alerted, and an RNLI lifeboat from the Aran Islands was placed on standby as a precaution.
The plane safely landed on Shannon's runway at 9:24pm Irish time, approximately five hours after departing London. Emergency vehicles closely followed the aircraft as it taxied. Following inspections, it was confirmed that there was no active fire, and the plane was escorted to its parking stand. All passengers and crew disembarked without injuries.
Virgin Atlantic arranged for a replacement aircraft to transport the stranded passengers onward to Jamaica. Engineers are currently investigating the cause of the engine failure.
