Brighton Pride is one of the UK's most iconic LGBT+ celebrations, drawing people from across the country every August. Unlike other prides, it uniquely combines a beach celebration, a city celebration, and a countryside celebration all in one. The main event is an expansive music festival in Preston Park, with past headliners including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, and Kylie Minogue. Attendees can immerse themselves in the crowd, explore multiple stages and dance tents, or relax with a drink under the trees.
Groundbreaking Policy Against Rainbow Washing
In 2017, Brighton Pride introduced a policy to prevent rainbow washing and empty corporate sponsorship. Businesses in the parade must show evidence of year-round pro-LGBT+ policies, and all floats and banners must include messaging supporting meaningful LGBT+ causes. This ensures the celebration remains authentic and protest-oriented.
Parade and Street Parties
The pride march kicks off on Saturday morning and runs for several hours, balancing queer joy with protest. This year's theme is 'The Power of Love', celebrating queer love, family, and intersections. After the parade, every corner of the city turns into a giant queer social, with official street parties on Marine Parade and after parties at Brighton's numerous LGBT+ venues.
Chilled Beachfront Gathering
For a quieter experience, Brighton's iconic beachfront offers an unofficial queer gathering. Hundreds of people sit on the pebbled shores, with rainbow and trans flags flying high. One attendee, a trans man, shared that it was the first time he felt comfortable taking his shirt off in public, highlighting the inclusive spirit.
Year-Round Inclusive Spirit
Brighton offers year-round events for queer women, trans people, and QPOC. There is a queer-friendly church, a nude beach popular with queer men, and inclusive saunas with discounted rates for the trans community. This inclusive environment makes Brighton a queer mecca, attracting visitors from across the UK.
Competition with World Pride
This year, Brighton Pride faces competition from World Pride in Amsterdam over the same weekend. However, Brighton is bringing an incredibly competitive lineup, including Ru Paul, Diana Ross, and Raye. Despite the potential draw of Amsterdam, Brighton Pride promises a memorable celebration.
