IKEA Announces Major US Expansion with 10 New Stores Opening in 2026
IKEA to Open 10 New US Stores in 2026 Across Key Cities

Swedish furniture giant IKEA has unveiled ambitious plans to significantly expand its footprint in the United States, with the announcement of 10 new store openings scheduled for 2026. This strategic move builds on the company's robust performance in 2025, during which it successfully launched 14 locations across the country.

New Store Locations and Strategic Focus

The new IKEA outlets will be established in a diverse array of metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Illinois; Culver City, California; Dallas, Texas (with two separate locations); Fort Collins, Colorado; Houston, Texas; Huntsville, Alabama; Phoenix, Arizona; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Washington, D.C. Concurrently, the company has confirmed the closure of its Memphis store in May 2026, as part of a broader restructuring effort to optimize its retail network.

Originally, IKEA had targeted the opening of six new stores in 2026, but due to the remarkable success and positive market reception experienced in 2025, the company decided to increase this number to ten. Rob Olson, Interim CEO of IKEA U.S., emphasized this point in an official statement, highlighting the firm's commitment to capitalizing on its current momentum.

Enhancing Accessibility and Sustainability

"Looking ahead to fiscal year 2026, we will build on this momentum, focusing on continued investment in the U.S. to make IKEA more affordable, accessible, and sustainable," Olson stated. This approach aligns with IKEA's broader corporate goals of reducing environmental impact and improving customer experience through innovative retail solutions.

Currently, IKEA operates 54 stores in the United States, with more than a third of these located in just three states: California (nine stores), Texas (seven stores), and Florida (five stores). Upon the completion of the 2026 expansion, California and Texas are each projected to host 10 IKEA locations, further solidifying the brand's dominance in these key markets.

IKEA's Unique Market Position and Business Model

IKEA stands out as the only primarily brick-and-mortar home-furnishings retailer to rank within the top 50 U.S. retailers, according to recent data from the National Retail Federation. The company is renowned for its vast warehouse-style stores that offer an extensive range of products, from furniture like beds and couches to decorative items, potted plants, and Swedish culinary specialties such as meatballs and cinnamon rolls.

Founded in Sweden in the 1950s, IKEA expanded internationally to Denmark and Norway in the 1960s before establishing its first U.S. store in Pennsylvania in 1985. Beyond its traditional retail outlets, which often feature in-store restaurants and cafes, IKEA also operates boutique-style Plan and Order stores. These specialized locations allow customers to collaborate with store representatives or use self-service stations to design kitchens, bedrooms, or living rooms and place orders for necessary items.

Recognition for Innovation and Social Impact

IKEA's innovative business model has garnered significant acclaim, particularly from the American Innovation Index. This index evaluates companies based on their performance in customer-focused areas such as creativity, innovation, value provision, and the positive societal and environmental changes they foster. In 2025, IKEA secured the top position in this ranking, outperforming other industry leaders like Apple, John Deere, Amazon, and Microsoft.

This recognition underscores IKEA's dedication to not only driving commercial success but also contributing meaningfully to community and environmental well-being. As the company prepares for its 2026 expansion, it continues to blend retail excellence with a commitment to sustainability and accessibility, ensuring that more Americans can access its affordable and stylish home furnishings.
