Home Bargains is taking staff and customers back in time to mark a major milestone. The brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary by paying tribute to its roots and transforming its Bold Street store.
A Look Back at the Beginnings
The legendary retail giant first arrived in Old Swan back in 1976, founded by 21-year-old Tom Morris, following in the footsteps of his dad, a local Scotland Road trader. The shop began life as Home and Bargain, and although the brand transitioned to its current title in 1995, it has since grown into a massive £8.06bn empire with more than 600 locations nationwide.
Retro Celebrations at Bold Street
In line with the celebrations, the company changed the store's sign back to its original name, colour and logos, and offered customers the chance to buy retro-inspired products. While the brand transitioned to its current title and iconic red-and-blue Home Bargains branding back in 1995, for many people across Liverpool, it remains affectionately known as “Home and Bargain”.
Long-standing members of staff celebrated at the Bold Street store with cake, decorations, and balloons, while customers viewed a selection of old-school items as well as grabbing their usual essentials. Staff could also be seen wearing the original uniform of a red pinny and black waist belt, and served customers their items in the original Home and Bargain paper bags.
Capturing the Moment
ECHO photographer Iain Watts captured the celebrations at the Bold Street Home Bargains store today (Thursday, June 18). The photographs show staff members Jean, Wendy, Jayne, Mary, Bonnie and Linda recreating an old staff picture, as well as other highlights including retro paper bags, a cake cutting, and shelves stocked with nostalgic products like Love Lane's Golden Oldie beer.
