Hillier Garden Centre in Hemel Hempstead to Close After 36 Years
Hillier Garden Centre Hemel Hempstead Closes in 2027

Hillier Garden Centre has announced the closure of its Hemel Hempstead location, which will shut its doors in January 2027 after 36 years of operation. The site is expected to be demolished and repurposed as a storage and distribution hub, following approval from the local council.

Decision and Plans for the Site

George Hillier, chairman of Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres, stated: “This was not an easy decision for us to make; however, it does present an exciting opportunity to reinvest in our business and continue the growth trajectory the company has achieved in recent years.” He added that the company is committed to supporting the Hemel Hempstead team during the transition and thanked colleagues and customers for their loyalty.

The garden centre first opened its doors in 1990. The council has reportedly approved proposals to demolish the building and convert the land into a storage and distribution hub.

Local Reaction and Social Media Outcry

Residents have expressed disappointment on social media. One local said: “Love going there for a cuppa and a scone... beautiful plants! This is very sad. Don’t we have enough storage facilities?” Another commented: “So sad, used to go there as a child... I loved going, and now take my one-year-old as she loves the fish and flowers!” A third added: “My mum would be so sad to hear this if she was still here. I got so many memories of us spending time there.”

Wider Context of Garden Centre Closures

The announcement follows the closure of another garden centre in Ormesby St Michael, near Great Yarmouth, earlier this week. That centre stated: “We have decided to call it a day. The joy of growing and selling plants has been taken away by the stress and pressure of running a small business in this economy.”
