In a direct comparison, Flash All-Purpose Cleaner outperformed Dr Beckmann Cleaning Sheets for floor cleaning, primarily due to its superior fragrance and finish. The test, conducted by Mia O'Hare, pitted the two popular products against each other on the same floor area, with Flash emerging as the clear winner.
The Contenders and Method
Dr Beckmann Cleaning Sheets come in a resealable zip-lock pouch containing 20 individual sheets that dissolve in water to create a liquid cleaning solution. The product claims to use 83% less plastic than conventional liquid all-purpose cleaners and promises to be "powerful against dirt and grease."
The sheets were on promotion at Heron for 69p, though they retail at £3.49 through Dr Beckmann's own store. The directions instructed users to place a sheet in a bucket filled with up to five litres of warm water. Following the guidance, the sheet dissolved entirely, generating plenty of suds, though it had a considerably stronger scent before dissolving than afterwards.
Test Results: Scent and Performance
Flash, which bills itself as the "number one UK floor cleaner," is available in liquid form for £2.25 from Heron. Both products boast a lemon fragrance, but Flash's was considerably stronger. Upon opening the bottle, a powerful aroma hit, which remained present even after mixing with water. The Flash cleaner required two cups of product added to five litres of water.
While the Dr Beckmann sheets cleaned effectively, lifting stains and marks, the lack of fragrance was a drawback. The sheets carry a lemon fragrance, yet when put to use, a rather peculiar, musty smell of water was detected instead. In contrast, Flash produced fewer suds but still delivered solid results, leaving a shine behind and removing scuffs and marks.
The Verdict
For O'Hare, there was an obvious winner. The Dr Beckmann sheets were somewhat underwhelming, despite their attractive price point on special offer. The absence of scent was a significant issue, as fresh aromas are preferred while cleaning. However, the sheets do offer an advantage: they use considerably less plastic and their compact packaging slots neatly into a cleaning cupboard without hogging space.
The Flash cleaner, however, is straightforward to use and boasts a far fresher fragrance. While both products did a good job of cleaning the floor, it's the distinctive scent that ultimately gives Flash the edge and crowns it the winner.
