Flatley bids final farewell to wife Niamh at funeral

Michael Flatley was pictured greeting mourners as he said his final goodbye to his beloved wife Niamh following her death at the age of 52. The Lord of the Dance star, 68, was among those gathered at the Church of St Therese in Mount Merrion, near Dublin, on Saturday, October 10, to pay tribute to his late wife.

Michael, dressed in a black suit, was seen embracing mourners outside the church ahead of the funeral service. The dancer appeared to share an emotional moment with a fellow mourner, who placed his arm around him as they spoke.

Emotional tribute to his 'best friend'

The Irish-American dancer paid a moving tribute to the woman he had been married to for 20 years, describing her as both his wife and his best friend.

"My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven," he wrote. "She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her. Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us. Please keep Niamh, Michael St James, and our family in your thoughts and prayers. Michael."

Michael announced the news that Niamh had died following a period of ill health earlier this month. Alongside his emotional message, he shared a series of photographs celebrating their life together, including a picture from their wedding day and a family photograph with their son, Michael Saint James, known as Michael Junior.

Family asks for privacy

In a statement following her death, a spokesperson for the family said they were struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss and asked for privacy during the difficult time. "The Flatley and O'Brien families are devastated by Niamh’s sudden passing and have asked that their privacy be respected as they come to terms with this heartbreaking loss," the spokesperson said.

They also thanked the medical team who cared for Niamh in her final weeks, adding: "They express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at Beacon Hospital who cared for Niamh over the past few weeks, and to everyone who has offered their kindness and support to the family." The family had previously indicated that Niamh had been receiving medical care at Beacon Hospital in Dublin.

According to the Irish Independent, Niamh had reportedly been just hours away from being flown to America for specialist treatment. Michael had devoted himself to caring for his wife amid her health struggles, spending every waking hour by her side.

A life in dance

Niamh started dancing aged just three and later became a performer with Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Fleet of Flames and Celtic Tiger. The dancer first met Michael on the set of Riverdance before appearing in the Riverdance line-up during their performance at the interval of Eurovision in 1994. Niamh also had a connection to Michael's hugely successful stage production, Lord of the Dance, having played the role of Saoirse.

The couple had kept much of their family life private, with Michael occasionally sharing glimpses of their relationship and their son with fans. Michael previously entered the Irish presidential race in 2025 but just weeks after announcing the news, he pulled out and stated that he "must put my family and my health first."

Earlier this year, Michael said that he had "something very special planned" ahead of their 20th anniversary. Speaking to RSVP Magazine, Michael said: "On our 10th anniversary, we renewed our vows in Westminster Cathedral, because at the time my son was going to Westminster Cathedral Choir School. I have something very special planned for the 20th to renew our vows. I shouldn't have just said that, my wife is going to know all about this! But I won't say what it is, and I won't tell her. I'm the luckiest guy in the world."
