Cotswolds Locals Sound Alarm Over JD Wetherspoon Pub Plans – 'It'll Ruin Our Village!'
Cotswolds villagers fight Wetherspoon pub plans

Furious locals in the idyllic Cotswolds village of Moreton-in-Marsh have launched a fierce campaign against plans to transform a cherished historic building into a JD Wetherspoon pub, warning it could 'destroy the character' of their community.

The proposed development at the Grade II listed Redesdale Hall has sparked outrage among residents who fear the budget pub chain's arrival would lead to increased anti-social behaviour and overwhelm local businesses.

'It Doesn't Fit With Our Village'

One concerned local told reporters: 'We're not against development, but this simply doesn't fit with our village. Wetherspoon's cheap drink promotions will attract the wrong crowd and ruin the peaceful atmosphere we cherish.'

Historic Building at Risk

Campaigners argue the 19th century hall, currently used for community events and weddings, would lose its character under the plans. 'This building is part of our heritage,' said a member of the local historical society. 'Turning it into a chain pub would be a tragedy.'

Council Faces Tough Decision

The controversy puts Cotswold District Council in a difficult position as they balance:

  • Preservation of local heritage
  • Economic benefits of new business
  • Community concerns about changing village dynamics

With over 300 objections already lodged, the planning decision is expected to be hotly contested when it comes before councillors next month.
