A warehouse worker has secured a life-changing £333,333 windfall on the Postcode Lottery, thanks to his mother's timely intervention that persuaded him to continue playing with an old postcode despite relocating.
Mum's Persuasion Leads to Massive Win
Lee Plant, aged 40, was on the brink of cancelling his Postcode Lottery ticket after moving back in with his mother, Wendy, in Northwood, having previously resided in Meir, Stoke-on-Trent. However, Wendy, a 59-year-old learning support worker for adults with disabilities, urged him to maintain his participation using his former ST3 6AL postcode. Her advice proved pivotal when three households within that postcode claimed a share of a £1 million Millionaire Street prize, netting Lee his substantial sum just a fortnight later.
Celebration and Future Plans
The mother and son celebrated their unexpected fortune with a karaoke night at the White Horse pub in Tunstall, marking the start of their new financial freedom. Lee expressed immense gratitude, stating, "If it wasn't for my mum, I wouldn't be here now... simple as that. I nearly cancelled my ticket and then mum told me not to." He plans to use the money to purchase a property, treat his mother and friends, and possibly go on holiday, emphasising that he would have been content with just £3,000.
Wendy, who earns minimum wage and previously received a £45,000 divorce settlement as her largest sum, described the win as "like a dream... it really is." She is now considering reducing her work hours to part-time, highlighting how the prize will enable family treats and a long-awaited holiday. "We'll treat the family. We've got a big one! It's going to make such a difference. We could actually go on a family holiday," she added.
Key Details and Broader Implications
Lee initially signed up for the Postcode Lottery while living in Meir and continued using that postcode after moving, a fact many players may not realise is permissible. He explained, "I read it on the website - you can play with your old postcode, or any postcode." This win underscores the lottery's flexibility and the potential for significant payouts, even for those who have relocated.
The story serves as a heartwarming reminder of familial support and the transformative impact of such windfalls on ordinary lives, particularly for individuals like Wendy, a grandmother of four, who now faces improved financial stability.
