British retailer Co-op is significantly expanding its physical presence this week with the launch of 11 new stores across the nation. This strategic move forms a key part of the company's ambitious plan to invest in over 200 new and refurbished locations throughout the 2024/25 financial year.
Strategic Expansion and Community Focus
The new openings, which span from Bristol to the Scottish Highlands, represent a mix of completely new shops, franchise-operated outlets, and sites that have been completely redesigned before re-opening. In a notable milestone, Co-op will become the first permanent retailer at the new Brent Cross Town development in London, cementing its role in the future of urban retail.
Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, emphasised the community-centric approach behind the expansion. "We are focussed on creating local stores which are more than just a shop – they are a hub locally that contribute to local life and meet the needs of communities, conveniently," she stated. "We're investing in stores and communities right across the UK because we believe in the future of the high street – creating local jobs and backing British farmers and suppliers."
A Call for Business Rates Reform
Alongside its growth announcement, Co-op has issued a direct appeal to the government. The retailer is calling for business rates reform in the upcoming Budget, arguing that certainty is essential for sustained growth in the sector.
McCrae elaborated on this point, stating, "However, sustained growth needs certainty, and the Government now has an opportunity at this week's Budget to deliver the fair business rate reform needed to give retailer’s the stability to invest and grow." This push for fiscal policy change underscores the challenges facing the UK's retail landscape even as companies like Co-op continue to invest.

The retailer estimates that its members could potentially save over £90 across October, November, and December. Furthermore, members receive an entry into a monthly prize draw for every £5 spent in-store or online.
Rachel Halter, Director of Membership at Co-op, commented on the enhanced benefits: "At Co-op, we're committed to providing more value to our member owners every day.
