The Queens Arcade in Cardiff, a shopping centre that opened in 1994 and once attracted over 10 million visitors annually, is undergoing a major renovation to become a food and leisure destination. The arcade, which was outshone by the adjoining St David's Shopping Centre, entered property receivership in 2023, prompting the new plans.
New Restaurants and E-Karting Planned
Three new restaurants will be introduced, along with an e-karting attraction. The grand entrance will be retained, and the facade will be upgraded. Phase one of the redevelopment awaits approval from Cardiff City Council, with phase two details expected in the coming weeks.
Statements from Officials
Helen Morgan, Centre Director at St David's Cardiff, said: 'Our exciting new plans for Queens Arcade build on our long-standing investment in Cardiff. Our plans will elevate the site in line with other areas of the city, enhancing the experience for locals and tourists visiting us at St David’s and the wider city.' She added that the redevelopment creates new job opportunities and complements the city's offerings.
Tim Treadwell, head of retail portfolio at Landsec, commented: 'We believe that our plans for Queens Arcade will help unlock its full potential, bringing even more of what people want to this exciting and growing city. As St David’s continues to go from strength to strength, this investment will build on that success, helping St David’s remain fresh and relevant, a go-to destination for new brands and guests alike.'
Impact on Cardiff City Centre
The proposed development is expected to increase footfall in Cardiff city centre, benefiting local businesses and enhancing the area's appeal as a retail and leisure destination.
