Cancer Research UK has revealed plans to shut down 88 of its charity shops across the United Kingdom this year, citing escalating operational costs, persistent inflation, and shifting consumer behaviours as primary drivers. This strategic move is part of a broader overhaul aimed at consolidating the charity's high street presence to approximately 320 top-performing outlets, ensuring long-term sustainability and enhanced funding for critical cancer research initiatives.

The closures, scheduled to be completed by May 2026, will see around 90 shops cease operations, with an additional up to 100 locations potentially shutting their doors by April 2027. Despite these reductions, Cancer Research UK intends to open 12 new out-of-town superstores over the next two years, targeting areas with higher footfall and profitability.
