A blind taste test conducted by the Daily Mirror has revealed that budget supermarket butters can rival, and even surpass, the popular Lurpak brand. With the cost of living crisis driving up prices, Lurpak now costs up to £7.50 for a 500g tub, while Aldi offers a similar product for £3.99. The test aimed to find the best affordable alternative.
Lidl's Daisy butter impressed with a robust flavour, though it was slightly overwhelming. Aldi's own-brand butter, however, was described as 'silky smooth' and 'divine', with one taster convinced it was the genuine Lurpak. Aldi's spreadable butter also scored highly for its creamy texture and salty punch.
In contrast, Tesco's butter was a disappointment. Despite being priced similarly to Lidl and Aldi options, it was criticised for a bland, greasy taste and an artificial margarine-like flavour. The taster noted it was 'missing that savoury punch' and left a lingering aftertaste.
Clover, a margarine blend, was praised as a budget-friendly option at 60p cheaper than Aldi's alternative. It was described as 'brilliant value for money' and avoided the fake taste of some competitors. However, for those seeking the closest match to Lurpak, Aldi's butter was the clear winner.
