Britons are creatures of habit when it comes to ordering takeaways, with a staggering three-quarters of households consistently choosing the exact same meal from their favourite delivery apps, according to revealing new research.
The study, commissioned by leading food delivery service Just Eat, uncovered that 76% of UK consumers admit to being stuck in a culinary groundhog day, rarely venturing beyond their tried-and-tested favourites despite having thousands of options at their fingertips.
The Nation's Comfort Food Champions
When it comes to Britain's most beloved takeaway, traditional fish and chips continues to reign supreme, claiming the top spot as the nation's favourite. The classic combination comfortably beat international rivals to maintain its status as the UK's ultimate comfort food.
Chinese cuisine secured a respectable second place, while pizza rounded out the top three most popular choices across the country.
The Psychology of the Perfect Takeaway
Food psychologists suggest this repetition provides emotional comfort and reduces decision fatigue after long working days. "Knowing exactly what to expect from your meal eliminates any potential disappointment," explains dietary behaviour specialist Dr Susan Roberts.
The research also highlighted that Friday evening remains the peak ordering period, with 42% of Brits considering it their designated takeaway night after a demanding week.
Regional Variations in Taste
While fish and chips dominates nationally, certain regions showed distinct preferences:
- Londoners demonstrated more adventurous tastes, with higher orders of diverse cuisines
- Northern regions showed stronger loyalty to traditional British options
- Coastal areas unsurprisingly maintained the strongest preference for fish and chips
The data suggests that despite the incredible variety available through modern delivery apps, most Brits would rather stick with their reliable favourites than risk culinary disappointment.
