A journalist who moved from New Zealand to the UK two years ago finally tried British KFC for the first time, and the experience was mixed. While some items were delicious, the chips lacked any seasoning, confirming rumours she had heard from fellow Kiwis.
The Order
Vita Molyneux ordered a meal similar to her typical New Zealand order: a popcorn chicken snack box, potato and gravy, and a snack burger with cheese. She was surprised to find that in the UK, potato and gravy are sold separately, and the snack burger is called a mini fillet burger without an option to add cheese.
The Disappointment
When the food arrived, the chips were hot but completely unseasoned. Vita said: "The chips were a little limp, but hot enough, but I could not get past the lack of salt. I don't understand why anyone would want to eat chips without anything on them." She added her own salt, which made them passable.
The Highlights
Despite the chip letdown, the burger was tasty with the right amount of mayonnaise, though the bun was sweeter than expected. The popcorn chicken was "absolutely perfect, light, airy, flavourful and crispy." The potato tasted more authentic than in New Zealand, and the gravy, though thin, was flavoursome. Vita combined leftover chicken with gravy and mash to create a "meat cereal" that she found satisfying.
Final Verdict
Overall, Vita's first British KFC exceeded expectations, but the lack of salt on the chips was a genuine disappointment. She wonders why KFC in the UK doesn't season their chips. However, as long as she has salt at home, she won't hesitate to order again.
