Arsenal could recoup some of the £75m transfer fee they paid for Bruno Guimaraes just days after signing him, thanks to a sell-on clause in Joe Willock's move to Newcastle United. The Gunners negotiated the clause when Willock joined the Magpies in 2021.
Willock Close to Besiktas Move
The 26-year-old left Arsenal in a deal valued at £25m after a loan spell, but his five-year stay in the North East may be ending. Willock is reportedly close to a £17.4m move to Turkish club Besiktas, with Newcastle having rejected a £10m bid earlier this summer.
ChronicleLive reports Willock's representatives have travelled to Turkey to negotiate with Besiktas, with agreement reportedly reached on personal terms. Willock is entering the final year of his contract at St James' Park, and Newcastle are keen to recoup a fee.
Sell-On Clause to Boost Arsenal Funds
That is positive news for Arsenal, who secured a sell-on clause rumoured to be around 20 per cent, though the exact percentage is undisclosed. Arsenal spent £75m to bring Guimaraes to north London and could bank millions from Willock's potential move, offsetting some of that outlay.
Gunners fans saw their new midfielder ahead of the Emirates Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund. Willock, meanwhile, has made 168 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 11 goals since leaving Arsenal. He broke into the Arsenal first team in 2017 and scored on his Premier League debut against Newcastle in April 2018, totalling 78 appearances and 11 goals in four campaigns.
Funds for Summer Signings
The clause ensures Mikel Arteta's side will profit financially. Arsenal are strengthening their squad ahead of their Premier League title defence, having already signed Christos Tzolis, Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier and Guimaraes. The additional funds could help secure further signings, with the club seeking a new left-winger.
Arsenal were linked with Morgan Rogers and Vinicius Junior, but Chelsea signed Rogers and Real Madrid extended Vinicius's contract.
