Aldi's 37p porridge pot beats Quaker Oats in taste test

Aldi's Original Porridge Pot, priced at 37p, emerged as the winner in a taste test of six instant porridge pots, beating Quaker Oats and other major supermarkets. The pot scored 8/10, with the reviewer praising its pleasant consistency and flavour.

Six pots tested

Sophie Harris, Senior Audience Writer, bought six individual supermarket pots and prepared each according to the instructions, using boiling water rather than her usual milk. She judged them on flavour, texture, creaminess, consistency and how enjoyable they were to consume.

Tesco's Instant Oats Original porridge pot, priced at 41p, scored 6/10. The reviewer found it had a good consistency, fairly thick, but noted it was a little too sweet without added sweeteners.

Mixed results from supermarkets

Sainsbury's Porridge Pot Original, at 65p, scored 4/10. The reviewer found the oats were still hard after the suggested time and went a little gloopy, calling it disappointing.

Quaker Oats' Oat So Simple Original Porridge Pot, at £1.30, also scored 6/10. It was ready in about two minutes and pleasant to eat, but the price did not justify the flavour and texture.

Bottom of the ranking

M&S's Traditional Porridge Pot, at £1.10, scored 2/10, with the reviewer finding the oats claggy and missing the mark. Waitrose's Original Porridge Pot, at 95p, scored 3/10, described as lumpy and unpleasant to eat.

Aldi's winning pot had a slight creaminess and resembled the porridge the reviewer usually makes with milk, requiring no sweeteners. While it did not achieve a perfect score, it was by far the tastiest sampled in the test.
