Aldi Boosts Staff Pay: Supermarket Giant Announces Salary Hike for Thousands of Employees
Aldi increases pay for thousands of UK employees

Discount supermarket giant Aldi has unveiled a major pay rise for its UK workforce, further cementing its reputation as one of the country's most employee-friendly retailers.

The new pay structure, which comes into effect from 1st February 2024, will see store assistants earning up to £12.40 per hour in London and £11.55 nationally - significantly above the current National Living Wage of £10.42.

What the Pay Rise Means for Aldi Staff

The salary boost represents Aldi's third pay increase in just twelve months, demonstrating the company's commitment to retaining and rewarding its 40,000-strong UK workforce.

  • London-based staff will see hourly rates jump from £12.10 to £12.40
  • Workers outside the capital will receive £11.55, up from £11.40
  • Warehouse operatives' pay will increase to £13.65 per hour

Aldi Leads Supermarket Pay Race

This latest move positions Aldi firmly ahead of its supermarket rivals in terms of base pay. The German discounter has consistently led the way on employee remuneration, having been the first UK supermarket to pay both the Living Wage Foundation rates and the voluntary Real Living Wage.

"This investment recognises the fantastic contribution our colleagues make every day," said Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland. "As well as offering the best pay in the sector, we're proud to provide industry-leading benefits."

Comprehensive Benefits Package

Beyond the pay rise, Aldi employees enjoy:

  1. Paid breaks
  2. Discounted gym memberships
  3. Generous maternity/paternity leave
  4. Company pension contributions

The supermarket's focus on staff welfare comes amid ongoing challenges in the retail sector, where businesses are grappling with recruitment and retention issues in a competitive labour market.
