Fish and Frites, a mobile fish and chip shop operating from a vintage 1966 van originally from Toulouse, France, has been hailed as serving the best fish and chips ever by customers. The business, which started in Anstruther, Fife, in 2018, now operates at The Hub on Edinburgh's Royal Mile and at events across Scotland.
A Van with History
The van, dating back to 1966, features a made-to-measure frying range and a bright blue-and-white colour scheme. It began as a family-run venture visiting local villages a few times a week but has since expanded to include a trailer.
Fresh Sourcing and Homemade Recipes
Fish and Frites sources its fish from seafood wholesaler G&J Wilson in St Monans, while potatoes are hand-prepared and chopped fresh for each order. The business also produces its own homemade batter and tartar sauce.
Award-Winning Recognition
Since opening, Fish and Frites has earned two 'Highly Commended' awards at the 2025 Scottish Fish and Chip Awards. It holds a 4.8 out of five rating on Google based on 178 customer reviews.
Customer Praise
One customer wrote: "Best fish and chips ever! Love the battered haddock! It was scrumptious, together with the tartar sauce and the chips. Staff was very nice and efficient." Another added: "The food is made to order... I waited less than 10 minutes. It was fresh, and the portion size was generous. I loved the tartar sauce!"
Events and Locations
The van appears at major events and festivals, including The Heartland Festival in Pitlochry, and can often be found outside Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh before or after rugby matches.
