List of Vehicles Banned from Motorway Right Lane in UK
Vehicles Banned from UK Motorway Right Lane

Certain vehicle types are prohibited from using the right-hand lane on a UK motorway with three or more lanes. This rule, often misunderstood, is strictly enforced and can lead to a fine of up to £300 and three penalty points on your driving licence.

Purpose of the Right Lane

The right-hand lane of the motorway, commonly but incorrectly called 'the fast lane', is intended solely for overtaking slower vehicles in the lanes to your left. According to the Highway Code, drivers should keep to the left lane unless overtaking. Once it is safe, you should return to the left lane. Additionally, remain alert to emergency services and vehicles pulled over on the hard shoulder or in emergency areas.

Vehicles Banned from the Right Lane

The following vehicles are not allowed to use the right-hand lane on motorways with three or more lanes in the same direction:

  • A goods vehicle with a maximum laden weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes but not exceeding 7.5 tonnes, if it must be fitted with a speed limiter.
  • A passenger vehicle designed to carry more than eight seated passengers plus the driver, with a maximum laden weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes.
  • A passenger vehicle designed to carry more than eight seated passengers plus the driver, with a maximum laden weight not exceeding 7.5 tonnes, if it must be fitted with a speed limiter.
  • A motor vehicle drawing a trailer.
  • A motor tractor, light locomotive, or heavy locomotive.

Exceptions to the Rule

There are some exceptions when these vehicles may use the right lane:

  • When necessary to overtake another vehicle carrying or drawing a load of exceptional width.
  • When changing lanes during a period when it would not be reasonably practicable to do so without causing danger of injury to any person or inconvenience to other traffic.

Drivers of banned vehicles should always remain in the left or middle lanes, using the right lane only when an exception applies. Ignorance of the law is not a defence, and penalties can be severe.
