The Post Office is set to close 52 branches across the UK by early October, following the closure of 100 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and several TG Jones outlets. The closures could push the total number of Post Office sites below the government's requirement of at least 11,500, according to The Sun.
Reason for Closures
Morrisons announced the closure of its Daily convenience stores in May, citing rising employment costs as the primary reason for the "tough but necessary decision." The company is consulting with affected staff and will seek to offer roles elsewhere in the business where possible. In June, the Post Office also announced closures linked to TG Jones store closures and is actively searching for replacement locations to host branches.
Geographic Impact
Many of the affected Post Office branches are located in southern England, with others in Wales, Scotland, and northern England. MPs in some constituencies are engaging with Morrisons and the Post Office to try to protect local postal services.
