Lloyds Banking Group has announced plans to close 79 branches across the UK, with several locations in the North East affected. The closures include 31 Lloyds Bank branches and 48 Halifax sites, impacting areas such as South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Durham, and Gateshead.
North East Branches Affected
The specific branches in the North East include Lloyds in South Shields and Wallsend, and Halifax in Durham, Gateshead, and Redcar. This follows an earlier announcement of 95 branch closures earlier this year, leaving Lloyds Banking Group with 531 branches nationwide after the latest closures.
Regional Impact
The North West and South East of England are among the worst-affected regions, with 12 branches closing in each area. London will see 10 closures, while the North East has four sites shutting down. The banking group stated that over 75% of the closing branches are within one mile of another Lloyds Banking Group site, and 95% have an alternative branch within five miles.
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: "With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our Community Bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before."

Halifax Brand Future
Earlier this year, reports suggested Lloyds Banking Group was considering phasing out the Halifax brand, which dates back to 1853. However, a spokeswoman for Lloyds said: "We regularly look at the role our brands play in supporting our customers. Our banking customers can already use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, and see any of their products and services in any of their apps – there are no changes for our customers today."
