The DVLA has issued a stark warning to caravan owners planning summer trips to Europe: failing to register a trailer over 750kg could result in a fine of up to €1,000 (approximately £850) or even refusal of entry at borders. The reminder, shared on X, urges motorists to check registration requirements before travelling to most European countries, though Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, and Spain are exempt.
When Registration Is Required
According to the DVLA, the rule applies to trailers and caravans with a maximum laden weight exceeding 750kg. This covers the vast majority of European destinations, but not all. The DVLA specifically states that the requirement does not apply when travelling to Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, or Spain. For other countries, turning up without the correct paperwork can lead to significant penalties.
How to Register
Registration is handled through the DVLA's online portal on GOV.UK. The service allows motorists to register a trailer for use abroad, set up an account to add one or more trailers, and update or manage details such as a change of name or address, or if a trailer is sold or scrapped. GOV.UK also notes that anyone towing an abnormal load trailer must apply for a keeper's certificate and keep it in the vehicle to show at border crossings if asked.
Costs and Required Information
The fees for registration are as follows: £26 for first-time trailer registration, £21 for a new registration certificate when there is a new registered keeper, and £10 to replace a lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed UK trailer registration certificate.
To complete the online application, you will need the trailer manufacturer's name, the trailer type (e.g., box trailer, container trailer, horsebox, or caravan), the VIN (usually 17 characters) or chassis number (normally on a metal plate or stamped on the chassis), the trailer's gross and unladen weight, an email address, a debit or credit card, and a Government Gateway user ID and password (which can be set up during the process if you do not already have one).
The DVLA's reminder on X read: "Going abroad this summer? If you’re taking a trailer or caravan, check if it needs to be registered before you travel." Motorists are advised to use the service online at GOV.UK to ensure compliance and avoid fines.
