Prince Harry has opened up about his embarrassment when showing Meghan Markle his former home at Kensington Palace, describing it as 'palace adjacent' in his memoir Spare. The couple initially lived in Nottingham Cottage, a modest two-bedroom property within the palace grounds.
In his book, Harry wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace.' He noted that the best description for the cottage was 'palace adjacent', contrasting it with the spacious 20-room Apartment 1A occupied by the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Nottingham Cottage, which has hosted several royals over the decades, features only two bedrooms, a reception room, kitchen, bathroom, and a small garden. Despite its modest size, it benefited from extensive security due to its location within the Kensington Palace estate.
Royal expert Christopher Warwick explained that the apartments at Kensington Palace are not flats but rather 'wonderful red brick terrace houses' that are joined but separate. The couple later moved to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor before stepping down as senior royals in 2020 and relocating to California.
