Manchester United have confirmed the proposed location for their new 100,000-seater stadium, which will sit at the heart of a new 'Stadium District' approximately 350 metres north-west of the current Old Trafford ground. The announcement was made as part of a sweeping masterplan for the 'sports-led' regeneration of the Trafford Wharfside area, unveiled on Thursday by Trafford Council.
Flagship Landmark of Wharfside Development
The new ground has been described as the 'flagship landmark' of the broader Wharfside development, which the council says will be 'a network of attractive neighbourhoods in which to live, work, wander and explore'. The masterplan encompasses new and upgraded public transport links, improved rail connectivity, and extensive walking and cycling routes. The vision centres on a 'diverse neighbourhood', bringing with it 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes.
Economic Impact
United stated that the mixed-use development spanning 150 hectares has the potential to deliver a £7.3bn per annum boost to the UK economy. Councillor Tom Ross, Leader of Trafford Council, said: "We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day."
Future of Old Trafford
United confirmed that no decision has yet been reached regarding the fate of the existing Old Trafford stadium. A public consultation process is now set to get under way.
