Ex-MP Daryl Maguire Jailed Over Property Kickbacks Scheme

Former New South Wales MP Daryl Maguire has been sentenced to prison for his involvement in a property kickbacks scheme, marking the latest chapter in a series of corruption cases that have highlighted the need for a strong federal integrity commission.

Maguire, who represented the electorate of Wagga Wagga, was found to have received kickbacks for attempting to secure favourable land deals for developer clients. The scheme involved relatively modest sums compared to other recent corruption cases, but it underscores the ongoing issue of misconduct among public officials.

The case against Maguire emerged from an investigation by the New South Wales Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), which has been instrumental in uncovering corruption at the state level. ICAC's Operation Keppel initially focused on Maguire but has since expanded to examine the conduct of former Premier Gladys Berejiklian, who had a close personal relationship with Maguire that was not disclosed to colleagues.

Berejiklian is under scrutiny for potential breaches of the ministerial code of conduct, including failure to disclose conflicts of interest related to grants made to Maguire's electorate. She has denied any wrongdoing and is scheduled to appear before ICAC to answer questions.

The Maguire case and other recent ICAC investigations, such as the jailing of former ministers Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald for a coal licence conspiracy, have reignited calls for a federal anti-corruption watchdog with strong powers. Critics argue that the Morrison government's proposed model lacks the teeth needed to effectively combat corruption, as it would not hold public hearings, could not investigate past conduct, and would be limited to examining criminal offences.
