British football fans face a potential own goal with roaming charges as the United States is named the most expensive destination for data usage abroad. A new study highlights the hidden costs of staying connected while travelling, particularly for those heading to this year's World Cup.
Roaming Costs Loom for World Cup Fans
More than half of Brits worry about accumulating large mobile phone bills from data usage, a concern that intensifies for travellers to the US. Sky Mobile's Data Roaming Index, released as the company expands its roaming offer from 55 to 120 destinations, reveals the behaviors that drain devices and the countries where costs skyrocket.
The research shows that forgetting to turn off app notifications can lead to bills of up to £20, while streaming a single film trailer could cost as much as £120.
Top Data Drainers Abroad
Sky Mobile's index identifies online messaging and accidental WhatsApp downloads as the most common data drainers for Brits abroad, affecting 56% of travellers. Using maps and navigation tools (52%) and search engines (48%) also rank highly. Additionally, booking restaurants, tours, and day trips accounts for 31% of data usage.
One-third of people admit to prioritizing social media posts enough to turn on data, despite the risk of significant charges.
Lack of Awareness and Savings Tips
The research reveals that 67% of travellers are unaware of data-saving hacks. To help, Sky Mobile has created a practical guide with roaming hacks to cut data usage while abroad. Key tips include downloading maps, playlists, and shows before travelling, switching on low data mode, and turning off automatic cloud syncing.
Those who ignore these tips face the highest bills in the US, followed by Thailand and Barbados. This could be an unwelcome surprise for England and Scotland fans following their teams.
Demographic and Regional Differences
The awareness gap is stark: 48% of 25-34-year-olds have faced unexpected roaming charges, compared to 26% of 55-64-year-olds. Northern Ireland shows the lowest awareness, with 51% never or rarely checking charges, nearly double the UK average of 28%.
Even minor phone use abroad can trigger hundreds of pounds in charges. Simple tasks become costly data drainers without the right plan.
Sky Mobile's Expanded Roaming Offer
Sky Mobile has expanded its Roaming Passport Plus from 55 to 120 destinations, including the EU/EEA, USA, Australia, and more. For £2 a day, customers can use their UK data, calls, and text allowances without setup or surprise bills.
Ben Case, Managing Director of Connectivity at Sky, said: “Over half of Brits are afraid to turn on roaming abroad due to potential charges – so Sky Mobile is making it simple. For just £2 a day, our customers can use their existing data allowance in 120 destinations without any setup or surprise bill shock.”
Roaming Passport Plus activates automatically, allowing access to UK allowances hassle-free.
