An interactive map has revealed the impact of the Iran war on UK petrol prices, with some areas seeing increases of up to 20 per cent. The conflict has driven the cost of unleaded petrol past 150p per litre, with prices as high as 162.9p in Hull.
According to the map, the average price of unleaded in Hull rose to 150.7p per litre on March 29, an increase of 19.4p since the war began. The cheapest petrol within five miles of Hull city centre was found at Tesco Hall Road, at 145.9p per litre, with diesel at 172.9p.
Motorists across the UK are paying millions of pounds extra per day in fuel costs. Filling up an average family car now costs £10.56 more than before the US and Israel began military operations against Iran in late February.
Oliver Blake, who runs an independent petrol station in Long Riston, East Yorkshire, explained that price rises are driven by wholesale pricing mechanisms. Stations on daily or 'spot' pricing see increases more quickly than those on weekly pricing. He noted that retailers are not deliberately raising prices but are forced to pass on costs to avoid losses.
