Man Utd: £13m Greenwood windfall, Ederson deal not dead

Manchester United are facing a mixed transfer window but could receive a significant financial boost from Mason Greenwood's potential move away from Marseille, while the club insists the Ederson deal is not dead despite reports of a failed medical.

Ederson transfer update

Reports on Friday night suggested that Ederson's transfer from Atalanta had stalled after a knee problem was detected during his medical examination in the UK. The Red Devils had agreed a deal worth just over £38 million and reached personal terms with the Brazil international before the World Cup. The 27-year-old had even indicated while with Brazil that the switch was virtually sealed.

However, multiple sources claimed the deal had collapsed. In contrast, the Manchester Evening News reports that Manchester United sources have refuted these claims, with the internal belief being that the suggestion the transfer had fallen through was designed to ramp up pressure to finalise the deal. The club do not regard the move as dead.

Greenwood windfall

United could pocket more than £13 million should Mason Greenwood secure a move away from Marseille in the coming days. According to ESPN, Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have both struck agreements with the French club for the forward's services.

Greenwood left United to join Marseille in July 2024 for a fee of £26.6 million. That agreement included a sell-on clause, which is poised to be activated if the 24-year-old completes a switch to either interested club. United would receive €14 million (£11.9 million) if he chooses to move to Turkey, or €15.7 million (£13.3 million) if he heads back to Madrid, having previously spent time on loan at Getafe.

Transfer window disappointments

The summer transfer window has proved to be a crushing letdown for Manchester United so far. Having surpassed all predictions and secured a third-place Premier League finish, hopes heading into this summer were sky-high. Andrey Santos will join from Chelsea in a £50 million deal, though the acquisition feels disappointing considering the array of top-class midfielders United had been tipped to pursue earlier in the window.

United lost out on priority targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes to Premier League competitors, with the club now potentially facing another transfer setback. However, Ineos bosses are still anticipated to splash cash on several signings, and the potential Greenwood windfall would bolster their transfer war chest before what promises to be a hectic summer window.
