Manchester United could receive a significant financial boost of up to £13.3 million from Mason Greenwood's potential transfer, while the club has denied reports that the Ederson deal has collapsed. The summer transfer window has been frustrating for United, with expectations high after a third-place Premier League finish under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
Ederson Transfer Not Off, Club Sources Say
Reports on Friday night suggested that Ederson's move from Atalanta was off due to an underlying knee issue discovered during his medical examination in the UK. However, the Manchester Evening News understands that United do not consider the move to be off. United sources have denied the transfer is off, and the feeling internally was that suggesting it had fallen through was to increase pressure to close the deal. Currently, it remains unclear whether Ederson's transfer will be completed or not. The Reds had arranged a deal valued at just over £38m and agreed personal terms with the Brazil international before the World Cup began. The 27-year-old even hinted while Brazil were still in the competition that the move was all-but confirmed.
Mason Greenwood Sell-On Clause Could Yield £13m
United stand to earn more than £13m if Mason Greenwood secures a move away from Marseille in the coming days. According to ESPN, Fenerbahce and Atletico Madrid have both struck agreements with the French club for the forward's signature. Greenwood left United to join Marseille in July 2024 for a fee of £26.6m. That agreement included a sell-on clause, which is set to be activated if the 24-year-old finalises his move to either of the interested clubs. United would pocket a substantial windfall of €14m (£11.9m) should he choose to relocate to Turkey, or €15.7m (£13.3m) if he heads back to Madrid, having previously spent time on loan at Getafe. That will bolster their transfer funds ahead of what promises to be a hectic summer window.
Mixed Transfer Window So Far
Andrey Santos will join from Chelsea in a £50million deal, though the signing is slightly underwhelming considering the array of top-class midfielders United had been linked with earlier in the window. United lost out on priority targets Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes to Premier League rivals, with the club now potentially facing another transfer setback. Ineos chiefs are still expected to invest funds in multiple signings, though they are battling against the odds to match last summer's success, given the inflated market and competition for elite players.
