GTA 6 Could Earn Half of GTA 5's Lifetime Sales in One Week, Analyst Predicts
GTA 6 Could Earn Half of GTA 5's Lifetime Sales in One Week

A new analyst report from video game market data firm Newzoo has refuted claims that Grand Theft Auto 6 generated $1 billion in pre-orders within an hour, but its projections for the game's launch week are still staggering. According to Newzoo, the $1 billion figure is 'absurd,' with actual digital pre-order spend reaching only $180 million (£133 million) in the final week of June after pre-orders went live on June 25. This data accounts for digital pre-order spending across the United States and the five largest European markets: the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Conservative Projections Still Massive

Even Newzoo's most conservative estimates place GTA 6's first-week sales at $3.25 billion (£2.4 billion), which would still make its pre-order campaign the largest in recorded history. More optimistic projections suggest the game could generate upwards of $5.2 billion (about £3.8 billion) in its launch week. For context, GTA 5 made $1 billion in its first three days and has generated nearly $10 billion in lifetime sales. This means GTA 6 could earn roughly a third to half of its predecessor's lifetime revenue in just one week.

Marketing and Physical Release Controversy

The data indicates that despite online criticism over the lack of a true physical release—physical copies contain only a digital code—and Rockstar's minimal marketing, with no dedicated gameplay trailer yet, consumer demand remains extraordinarily high. The absence of a physical disc has not dampened enthusiasm, and most players are already committed to purchasing the game at launch.

Online Multiplayer and Industry Impact

Rockstar has not formally announced an online multiplayer mode for GTA 6, but it is widely expected given the enduring success of GTA Online as a persistent revenue stream. The high demand for GTA 6 has prompted many publishers to avoid releasing major titles in November, leading to a crowded September and October. Exceptions include Atari, which plans to release a remaster of a Godzilla fighting game and a collection of retro Barbie games in November, and Sega, which will launch its Switch 2 port of Metaphor: ReFantazio during the same period.
