Michael Carrick tells £42m Man Utd star to leave as AC Milan open talks
Carrick tells Ugarte to leave as AC Milan open talks

Michael Carrick has told Manuel Ugarte that he is surplus to requirements at Manchester United, as AC Milan begin talks to sign the midfielder for new manager Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese boss, who was sacked by United five months ago, has identified Ugarte as a top target for the Serie A side.

Amorim eyes reunion with Ugarte

Ruben Amorim was confirmed as AC Milan's new manager earlier this week, signing a two-year deal with the Italian giants. He is keen to strengthen a squad that finished fifth in Serie A last season, missing out on Champions League qualification under former boss Massimiliano Allegri. Amorim previously worked with Ugarte at Sporting and later brought him to Manchester United in a £42m deal from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ugarte, 25, has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, rarely starting under either Amorim or Carrick last season. Despite his difficulties, he retains admirers across Europe, and Amorim's AC Milan are lining up a summer move.

Carrick's verdict

According to reports, Carrick has informed Ugarte that he should find a new club as United prepare to welcome Ederson from Atalanta in a £35m deal, along with at least one more midfielder. Ugarte accepts his future lies away from United and has instructed his agent, Jorge Mendes, to secure a move. Mendes has already opened talks with AC Milan, and Ugarte is open to a third spell under Amorim.

Milan still need to agree a fee with United, who are hoping to raise £30m for the Uruguayan. However, the Serie A side are reluctant to meet that figure.

Ugarte's previous stance

Speaking towards the end of last season, Ugarte suggested he intended to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place. 'It sounds like a cliche, but it's what you learn the most from,' he said. 'It's something you have to learn to deal with, and it's part of the career. I've learned a lot, and I know my opportunity will come.'

Former Chelsea midfielder Gus Poyet urged Ugarte to 'make a good decision for him and his family.' Poyet had previously wanted Ugarte to join Chelsea before his move to PSG. 'He needs to find the right club,' Poyet said. 'It's a big summer for Ugarte, and I hope he makes a good decision.'

Alongside Ugarte, Amorim is also keen to sign a new striker and admires former United target Goncalo Ramos.
