Will Home Insurance Cover Wildfire Damage? ABI Explains

As wildfires continue to spread across parts of the UK, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has clarified that most standard home insurance policies typically cover damage caused by fire, including wildfires. The ABI, which represents over 250 member companies, says this coverage can include emergency payments and help with repairing or rebuilding damaged properties.

Coverage and Next Steps

If your home is no longer safe to live in, most home insurance policies should also provide alternative accommodation. However, the ABI recommends reading your insurance documents carefully, as the exact level of cover will depend on your individual policy.

You should contact your insurer as soon as possible, but only when it is safe to do so. Be sure to follow safety advice from local authorities above all else.

Insurer Response

Louise Clark, General Insurance Policy Manager at the ABI, said: “Supporting customers who have suffered damage from fires, including wildfires, is what insurance is there for. Our members are on hand to support affected customers, so if your property has been damaged, speak to your insurer as soon as possible. They will be able to offer help and advice on next steps.”

Current Situation

Fire crews were today tackling huge blazes in the West Midlands after multiple homes were left engulfed in flames. This comes after the UK recorded its hottest day of the year yesterday, with temperatures topping 38C. Fire chiefs have responded to more than 1,000 wildfires so far this year in England and Wales.

Wildfires are normally started by human actions, but drought conditions and dry vegetation make it easier for fires to spread. Prime Minister Andy Burnham this week urged UK retailers to pull disposable barbecues from shelves and told the public to stop using them immediately, over the risk of wildfires.

Cost-Cutting Tips

If your home insurance is up for renewal, start looking for new prices through a comparison site to see if you can find the same cover cheaper elsewhere. MoneySavingExpert.com recommends checking for new home insurance quotes 21 days before your current deal expires. If you find a better deal, you can either switch, or go back to your existing provider and haggle to see if they can offer you a lower price.
