Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, has issued a warning to anyone planning to travel to Europe this summer: never pay for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Speaking at the National Money Assembly at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Lewis emphasised that the card is "totally free" and urged holidaymakers to apply before departing the UK.
What is the GHIC and Why Do You Need It?
The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) allows travellers to access state healthcare in European Union countries at the same cost as a local resident. If treatment is free for locals, it is free for GHIC holders. Lewis explained: "If you need to go and see the doctor when you're abroad and local people don't pay for the GP, you can go to the GP with your GHIC card."
The card covers medically necessary healthcare during a temporary stay in the EU and certain other countries. However, it does not cover private medical treatment, mountain rescue, repatriation to the UK, or costs related to lost or stolen belongings.
Never Pay for a GHIC
Lewis stressed that the GHIC is entirely free when applied for through the official NHS website. He warned against third-party websites that charge fees, saying: "That's totally free, never pay for it." The vast majority of people can apply online at no cost.
Travel Insurance Still Essential
Despite the benefits of the GHIC, Lewis urged travellers not to rely on it alone. He recommended arranging travel insurance as soon as a holiday is booked, as it provides protection both before and during the trip. "If you can afford the holiday, you can afford travel insurance," he said, noting that basic travel insurance for a young person spending a week in Europe can cost as little as £7 to £10.
Lewis's rule of thumb is to take out travel insurance "ASAB" – as soon as you book. This ensures coverage if illness, injury, or another unforeseen event forces cancellation before departure.
