British Gas Offers Free Electricity Worth £4,400 for Every England Goal
British Gas Free Electricity £4,400 Per England Goal

British Gas is offering its customers a chance to win five years' worth of free electricity for every goal England scores in their World Cup quarter final against Norway this weekend. Each goal will be worth £4,400, with all British Gas customers automatically entered into the prize draw. Winners will be selected at random after the final whistle, and the money will be applied as a bill credit on the customer's electricity account.

Previous Winners from Mexico Match

This promotion follows England's 3-0 victory against Mexico on Monday, where three British Gas customers each won £4,400 worth of energy. The offer aims to give customers another reason to celebrate during the tournament.

A British Gas spokesperson said: "There's nothing quite like getting behind England together, and we wanted to give our customers another reason to celebrate every goal this weekend. We're always looking for ways to give back to our customers, whether that's through prizes, rewards or helping them save money at home. Last weekend we were delighted to see three of our customers win five years free electricity, and we're excited to offer more customers the chance to be winners this Saturday."

Other Energy Firms' World Cup Offers

British Gas is not the only energy provider offering perks during the World Cup. EDF is giving households two hours of free electricity during the match on Saturday if they register by midnight on Friday. Additionally, customers will receive an extra hour free if the match goes into extra time. Over 100,000 customers have already signed up for this benefit.

Rising Energy Bills

The promotions come as energy bills have increased following the Ofgem price cap rise of around 13% on July 1. For a typical household paying by direct debit, the price cap rose from £1,641 to £1,862 per year. The cap will remain in place until October, when it will be updated again. Households have been warned that bills will remain high. Cornwall Insight expects a typical household to face a bill of £1,849 from October, which will hit harder as people switch their heating back on in colder months.

Energy Ombudsman Improvements

In related energy news, the Energy Ombudsman has helped resolve over one million customer complaints. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced on June 17 that it will improve access to the Energy Ombudsman for consumers, including reducing the complaint escalation timeframe from eight weeks to six weeks, and ensuring compensation for consumers when remedies are not implemented on time.
