A 25-year-old man has died and seven people, including five police officers, are being treated in hospital after a gas leak at an Indian restaurant in Sydney’s north-west.
Emergency services were called to Haveli restaurant in Riverstone just after 9am on Tuesday morning. The man, believed to have been an employee, was found unconscious and later died. The restaurant’s owner and his son attempted CPR before police arrived.
Police officers also tried to revive the man but detected an odour and moved him. They were subsequently taken to hospital suffering from the effects of the gas. All those hospitalised are in a stable condition.
Fire and Rescue NSW said the cause of the leak is under investigation, with carbon monoxide a strong possibility. Hazmat crews are working to determine the gas and make the area safe.
Two people were taken to Hawkesbury District Hospital, three to Blacktown Hospital, and two to Mount Druitt Hospital.
