Glee reboot confirmed by Disney for Hulu after 11 years

Disney has officially confirmed that Glee is returning, with a revival of the hit musical comedy set to air on streaming platform Hulu. The announcement comes 11 years after the original series ended in 2015.

The confirmation was made in a joint social media post on Wednesday, which read: "It's Official, Glee is returning," and was quickly flooded with comments from fans. Details of the storyline and casting have yet to be revealed.

Creator's Script and Cast Contact

The announcement follows creator Ryan Murphy's revelation last month that he had finished writing a script for the reboot. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in September, Murphy said he had completed the script just an hour before the interview.

Murphy worked on the project with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who helped write the show's first two seasons. He said he had been in touch with around 10 original cast members, describing the conversations as "very sweet." He added that the actors had plenty of questions but were "very enthusiastic" about the idea, although none had read the script at that stage.

The creator explained he wanted to write a couple of scripts to gauge the reaction, particularly from the cast, saying they had been very close while working on the original series.

Original Series Legacy

The original Glee followed a group of high school students in the New Directions glee club as they navigated relationships, family, sexuality and the challenges of growing up, all while performing their own versions of hit songs. It became a global hit and helped launch the careers of stars including Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry, and Cory Monteith, who played her on-screen boyfriend Finn Hudson.

The show also starred Jane Lynch as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester and Matthew Morrison as glee club director Will Schuester. However, the series has also been marked by the deaths of several members of its cast.

Cast Reunion and Tragedies

The reboot news comes days after former Glee stars Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, and Darren Criss, who played Blaine Anderson, reunited in London. The pair performed their duet Baby It's Cold Outside at the Royal Albert Hall during Criss's solo concert.

Monteith died in 2013, aged 31, from a toxic mix of alcohol and heroin. Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, died in an accidental drowning in 2020, aged 33. Mark Salling, who played Noah "Puck" Puckerman, died in 2018, aged 35, after pleading guilty to child pornography charges.

While the revival has now been confirmed, fans will have to wait for further details about when the new series will arrive and whether familiar faces will return.
