Stellantis is set to launch a new range of small, low-cost fully electric cars, known as the 'E-Car', to revitalise Europe's entry-level vehicle market. Production of these affordable compact EVs is scheduled to commence in 2028 at the company's Pomigliano d'Arco plant in Italy, with a target price of approximately 15,000 euros.
Strategic Move to Address Market Neglect
This strategic move aims to address the neglect of the low-cost car segment by many manufacturers, who have shifted towards larger, more expensive models due to rising electrification and safety regulation costs. Stellantis plans to leverage strategic partnerships to minimise development costs and accelerate the 'E-Car' project, simultaneously bolstering local manufacturing employment.
Boosting European Manufacturing and EV Adoption
The European Commission recognises the potential of this new E-Car segment to boost European design and manufacturing jobs and support wider EV adoption, particularly for everyday city mobility. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to transition to electric mobility while making EVs accessible to a wider range of consumers.
Stellantis' move comes as France develops a major lithium mine to support Europe's electric vehicle supply chain, highlighting the continent's push for self-sufficiency in critical raw materials. The 'E-Car' project is expected to stimulate competition and innovation in the small EV segment, potentially prompting other manufacturers to follow suit.
