Bulgaria's Eurovision 2026 Hopeful Dara on ADHD and 'Bangaranga'

Bulgaria's Eurovision 2026 contestant Dara, born Darina, is a 27-year-old singer and songwriter from Varna, a city on the Black Sea coast. She rose to fame after finishing third on the Bulgarian X Factor at age 16 and has since achieved multiple number-one hits in her home country, including 'Thunder' and 'Call Me'. Dara also served as a coach on The Voice of Bulgaria in 2021 and 2022, mentoring the next generation of musicians.

Personal Journey and Album 'ADHDARA'

Last year, Dara released her most personal album yet, 'ADHDARA', named after her diagnosis with ADHD as an adult. The album explores themes of chaos, sensitivity, and fire, embracing every contradictory part of herself. 'It was terrifying and liberating in equal measure,' she says.

Musical Roots and Training

Dara attended the National School of Arts in Varna, where she specialised in folklore singing. This traditional Bulgarian vocal technique, with its microtones and emotional rawness, remains central to her music, even in pop tracks like 'Bangaranga'. 'That training is in my DNA,' she explains.

The Inspiration Behind 'Bangaranga'

The song 'Bangaranga' draws its title from Jamaican slang meaning uproar or commotion, a beautiful kind of disorder. Dara describes it as 'pop music with folklore bones' designed to hit listeners physically before intellectually. The deeper inspiration comes from the ancient Bulgarian ritual of kukeri, where men wear elaborate costumes of bells and animal masks to scare away evil spirits with ferocious noise. 'That energy is overwhelming, joyful, and alive,' Dara says. 'Bangaranga is a happy riot, an invitation to surrender to the lights.'

Representing Bulgaria at Eurovision

Bulgaria has been absent from Eurovision for three years, with its best result being Kristian Kostov's second place in 2017. A win would be 'in a completely different dimension,' Dara admits. However, her motivation extends beyond victory: 'What drives me is Bulgaria being seen. We are a small country with an enormous cultural soul. If Bangaranga makes someone look up Bulgaria, its music, coast, literature, and people, then I've achieved something real.'

Dara will perform 'Bangaranga' at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, Austria, this year.
