A young Scotland fan has turned a profit by selling his kilt to an American tourist at a FIFA Fan Zone in Miami, netting $100 for a garment he bought for £19 on eBay.
Hustling in the Fan Zone
The Tartan Army invasion of Miami began earlier this week as supporters gathered in the city ahead of Scotland's final Group C match against Brazil at the Hard Rock Stadium on Wednesday night. The match ended in a 3-0 defeat for Steve Clarke's team, leaving Scotland on the brink of elimination from the World Cup after a nearly 30-year absence.
Despite the disappointing result, spirits remained high among fans, particularly one business-minded youngster who demonstrated impressive bartering skills when approached by an American man seeking a kilt.
The Deal
The boy's mother shared a TikTok video of the exchange, captioned: "I left him for two seconds and he's sold his kilt." In the clip, the boy, named Justin, recounts the encounter: "An American guy walks up and he goes, 'I'm American but I'm supporting my ancestry... in Scotland.' So I said, 'alright, mate, good on you.' I thought he was just going to ask me a question, and he goes, 'I'm looking for a kilt, do you know anybody who's got a kilt?' I says I've got one on the now. He says, 'I'm offering $200 for a kilt', the next minute, I go, 'I'll give you a kilt the now for $200.' He whips out $100 and says he could transfer me the rest. I went, 'mate, I'll do $100.' So I got $100 for a kilt that cost me $19 off eBay. These guys must be made of money!"
Social Media Reaction
The savvy exchange drew amused reactions on social media. One user commented: "He's defo got the patter of a salesman!" Another wrote: "Honest wee laddie. He could've got more but he's humble. Makes me proud to be Scottish." A third said: "Good wean, hustling!" while a fourth joked: "Can see him on The Apprentice!" Others added: "What a steal!" and "What a legend!"
Match Context
The Scotland team faced a lackluster end to the group stage, with Brazil dominating at the Hard Rock Stadium. Carlo Ancelotti's side ran out comfortable winners, damaging Scotland's goal difference significantly. Despite the defeat, Scotland could still advance as one of the best third-placed teams with three points and a minus three goal difference.
