Tragic Workplace Accident Claims Two Young Lives in Toxic Gas Exposure
A devastating workplace accident has resulted in the deaths of two young men who were exposed to lethal hydrogen sulfide gas while performing a cleaning job. The incident occurred on Tuesday when Daniel Hagle, aged 20, and his colleague Michael Kammer Jr., aged 21, were servicing a well.
Deadly Chemical Reaction in Confined Space
According to authorities, a chemical reaction took place during the well servicing, producing deadly hydrogen sulfide gas. The toxic fumes quickly overwhelmed Michael Kammer Jr., leaving him unconscious. In a heroic attempt to save his co-worker, Daniel Hagle called for help before entering the well himself.
Tragically, both men succumbed to the toxic fumes and were pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to hospital. St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King explained the circumstances: "This has been apparently a substance they used in the past, but this was a confined space, so when the acid interacted with a mineral or chemical in that well, it off-gassed."
Multiple Casualties and Community Impact
The incident affected several other individuals working at the location. Three additional men were hospitalised for gas exposure but are expected to recover fully. Several first responders who attended the scene required decontamination at a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
The tragedy has deeply shaken the local community, where both young men were well-known and respected. Daniel Hagle was described by his parents, Duane and Cherrie Hagle, as "the most hardworking boy" who volunteered at a local church and served as a devoted companion to a Vietnam veteran.

Michael Kammer's mother, Jenny Kammer, witnessed the harrowing scene as first responders retrieved her son's body. She told reporters: "I collapsed, I couldn't breathe. I couldn't do nothing. I just froze. No mother should have never had to see that."
