Montenegro's iconic Sveti Stefan island has reopened to tourists after being closed for five years due to a legal dispute. The luxury resort, operated by Aman, will welcome guests again this summer following a settlement with the Government of Montenegro over beach access.
The island, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand, was closed in 2021 amid a dispute over public access to beaches. Under the new agreement, locals will have free access to Sveti Stefan Beach and King's Beach, while Queen's Beach remains private for hotel guests.
Sveti Stefan, described by Lonely Planet as the most 'extraordinary sight along the Adriatic shoreline', features three pink-hued beaches. The distinctive colour comes from a mix of fine sand, crushed red shells and pebbles. The island has hosted celebrities including Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.
Montenegro has seen a 164% increase in UK flights in 2024, with direct flights from London taking around three hours. Visitors can fly to Tivat or Podgorica airports, with return flights from Luton to Tivat starting at £250 in early July.
