Manchester United could look totally different next season as they gear up for a summer of significant change. The club is poised to be busy in the transfer market once more, aiming to bolster their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League.
Champions League Return and Carrick's Impact
Michael Carrick's side secured their place in Europe's elite competition with a 3-2 victory over Liverpool at the weekend. This marks a return after a year's absence following a woeful 15th-placed finish under Ruben Amorim 12 months ago. Since Carrick assumed temporary control, United have progressed from strength to strength, winning 10 out of 14 matches and surging up to third in the Premier League table.
With only three games remaining this season, the club's hierarchy will start to shift their attention towards the summer transfer window. Numerous rumours are circulating, and anticipation continues to grow around a refreshed United squad next year.
Real Madrid Star Signs
United's primary objective this summer is to reconstruct their midfield. Casemiro is bringing his four-year spell at the club to a close, having confirmed his departure earlier this year. With one crucial player heading out, other stars may also seek pastures new. Manuel Ugarte has been linked with a switch to AC Milan, potentially removing another squad member from the wage bill.
United have been linked with numerous midfield targets, including Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni. The France international is valued in excess of £70m by the La Liga giants and will only be permitted to depart if the club lands one of their own midfield objectives. His signing would be regarded as a significant statement as United return to the Champions League.
Atalanta star Ederson has also been mentioned, with reports indicating that the 26-year-old is valued at approximately £43m. Securing Tchouameni and Ederson would cost around £113m, though. Given it's the area where United must be most proactive in the summer, it would hardly be surprising to see them commit most heavily here to complement the ability of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes.
Premier League Targets
While United will examine the continent closely, they're not opposed to recruiting proven Premier League talent – as last summer demonstrated. Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly is one target for the club's defence as a long-term successor to Luke Shaw. The England international could set United back around £50m, with Arsenal reportedly placing a combined £100m valuation on both Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last year but has subsequently struggled to secure regular first-team football due to Piero Hincapie's strong form. He may view a switch to United as a chance for a new beginning, following in the footsteps of Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi-Martin in making the transfer to Old Trafford.
Newcastle's Sandro Tonali has also been linked as another midfielder United are monitoring. Reports indicate that the Italian is eager to stay in England should he leave St James' Park this summer, despite attention from Real Madrid. It has been suggested that Newcastle have placed a £100m price tag on him, although it is thought a reduced fee could be agreed.
Marcus Rashford Replaced
Marcus Rashford appears set to depart United this summer after shining on loan at Barcelona this season. The 28-year-old has registered 27 goal contributions across 46 appearances for the La Liga outfit and has attracted interest from two European powerhouses. Barca are hoping to negotiate another loan deal or a reduced transfer fee, while Arsenal and Bayern Munich are said to be monitoring the situation regarding the England international. With Rashford's £315,000-a-week salary due to be permanently removed from the wage bill, they could swiftly move for the winger's successor.
Rafael Leao has been touted as a target for United, with a proposal involving Ugarte plus cash being explored. AC Milan are believed to value the 26-year-old at approximately £52m, with Italian outlet Calciomercato reporting that the winger is not untouchable this summer.
