Pensioners Face Reduced Payments After Overpayments Error

Pensioners affected by an administrative error in Armed Forces pension schemes will have to repay overpaid amounts, with some facing demands for more than £100,000. The Government has apologised for the mistake but confirmed it is legally obliged to recover the funds.

Scope of the Error

The error involves two final-salary pension schemes that provide guaranteed lifetime incomes to approximately 432,000 former service personnel. Payment demand letters have only recently been sent out, despite the Ministry of Defence discovering the calculating mistake two years ago.

Veterans minister Calvin Bailey addressed the issue on the BBC's Money Box programme, saying: "I have to be honest to say that we have a responsibility to the taxpayer to recover this money in some way, shape, or form. I hope we do that in a way that is reflective of the service of those people that have been impacted."

Repayment Plans and Apology

Mr Bailey acknowledged that receiving such a letter could be worrying, especially for those told their payments will be reduced to claw back the cash. He said: "I'm sorry that they [veterans] and we have arrived at this position. I recognise that receiving the totality of the error in one letter will be something that people will find quite difficult and shocking, and that is never a position that I want to see our service people in."

An official inquiry is under way to determine how the accounting flaw occurred and went unchecked for years. Mr Bailey assured affected individuals: "Those people that are impacted should rest assured that we will work with them to make sure that we have tailored repayment plans, that the way in which we address this will be manageable, and I hope to be working closely with all of these people."

Impact on Veterans

One Royal Navy veteran was told he must repay £18,200 because of the debacle, as reported by This is Money. Mr Bailey urged those affected to seek help, saying: "I would steer them towards our veteran services and to the helplines that are available, and we will do all we can to make sure that our response to this is as empathetic as it can be."
