Manchester United are reportedly in a race against time to sell Marcus Rashford, with the club needing to raise funds before their pre-season training camp in Dublin next month. The Red Devils have already agreed a £35m deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, but other targets have slipped away due to financial constraints.
United's summer transfer struggles
The 20-time English champions have suffered setbacks in their pursuit of midfield reinforcements. Targets Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali have opted to join rivals Manchester City and Tottenham respectively. According to reports, the astronomical costs were to blame, with United forced to be shrewd in the market due to their financial limitations.
Rashford's uncertain future
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, but the La Liga side opted not to make the deal permanent despite a favourable clause in his contract. Instead, they spent big on fellow England international Anthony Gordon, leaving United in a difficult position with a player they were expecting to sell.
The Sun reports that United want to offload Rashford before their pre-season training camp in Dublin to avoid an awkward reunion with his teammates. Rashford will be given a generous break following his World Cup exploits with England.
Rashford's own words
Rashford spoke about his future earlier in the World Cup, stating: "I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup, I wanted [a transfer] done before. If it's not [going to happen], I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment. We're fighting for something special."
Potential Tchouameni deal complicated
United have been linked with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who reportedly has a price tag of £85m. Talks have taken place between the two clubs, but any potential switch could be conditional on other deals being confirmed first, including the sale of Rashford.
Upcoming fixtures
United's Premier League campaign begins on Saturday, August 22, with an away match against Hull City. They then face another newly promoted side in Ipswich Town, followed by meetings against Everton and rivals Manchester City.
