Andoni Iraola has given a clear indication that Liverpool's squad is not yet ready for the challenges ahead, publicly stating the team needs more reinforcements after a quiet transfer window. Speaking on Monday, the new head coach highlighted the departure of senior players and key injuries as major hurdles.
Iraola's Candid Assessment
Unlike his predecessor Arne Slot, who inherited a settled squad and led Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th title in his first season, Iraola faces a very different situation. “I think we have to accept there are difficult situations right now in terms of, I would say, both sides: a lot of senior players leaving, very important players that have achieved almost everything here in the club, and also some of the very important players (who are) injured,” Iraola said. “Obviously we've signed two players already but we need more players – we know this.”
Slot had the luxury of a fully fit and experienced squad in 2024, with only fringe players departing and Federico Chiesa the sole arrival. In contrast, Iraola has lost eight of the 20 players from Jurgen Klopp's final matchday squad in May 2024, with two more sidelined by injury.
Transfer Activity and Squad Gaps
Liverpool have signed centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60 million and winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million. However, Jacquet has no experience in English football, and Munoz will not join until next month due to World Cup duty with Spain. Long-term injuries to Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, and Giovanni Leoni further deplete the squad.
Iraola's concerns are compounded by the imminent US tour, where Academy players will fill gaps but are unlikely to be ready for Premier League action. The transfer deadline is just a week after the season starts on August 23, leaving little time to strengthen.
Patience Required
Slot had his squad ready from day one and won 23 of his first 27 games. Iraola cannot expect such a start. “The rebuild is going to take time – and supporters and players are going to have to be braced for that,” the article notes. Iraola's public plea underscores the need for Liverpool to act quickly to avoid falling behind early in the campaign.
