Tommy Fleetwood's £120,000 prize money from the 2018 Open Championship was accidentally sent to an American golf enthusiast who shares his name, Thomas Fleetwood. The error occurred after Fleetwood tied for 12th at Carnoustie and noticed a delay in his winnings appearing in his bank account.
How the Mistake Happened
The DP World Tour, formerly the European Tour, mistakenly transferred the funds to Thomas Fleetwood, an American who had previously attempted to qualify for the European Senior Tour. Thomas Fleetwood explained to Reuters: "It was an honest mistake. I tried to get on their senior tour, so they have my [bank] information."
Fleetwood's Reaction
Tommy Fleetwood took the mishap in stride, telling reporters: "It looks pretty genuine. They [the European Tour] are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it. It's a funny story. It's just something I don't really look at but I'll get on top of that."
The American Namesake's Account
Greg Thorner, a friend of Thomas Fleetwood, described the moment they discovered the error: "I didn't believe him at first but then I watched him log into his account and I was like 'Holy crap'. He was not positive it was the same amount that Tommy won at the Open but we checked and it was. He immediately contacted the bank and told them you've put money into my account that's not mine and unfortunately the money has already been taken out."
Fleetwood's Major Drought
Now 35, Fleetwood is still chasing his first major title as The Open concludes at Royal Birkdale. He has yet to record a top-10 finish in any major in 2026, but remains one of the most talented players on the PGA Tour without a major victory. His estimated net worth of £25 million means the missing £120,000, while significant, is a fraction of his overall wealth.
