Gloucester services on the M5 has been named the best motorway service station in Great Britain by consumer group Which?, while Bridgwater in Somerset was rated the worst. The survey, based on over 9,000 visits by more than 4,000 Which? members, ranked nearly 100 stations across the country.
Gloucester achieved an overall customer score of 85% and five-star ratings for shops, food and drink, facilities, cleanliness, convenience, accessibility, and outside space. Owned by Westmorland Family, it was followed by Tebay services in Cumbria (also Westmorland-owned) in second place, Moto's Rugby services in third, Westmorland's Cairn Lodge in Lanarkshire in fourth, and Extra's Leeds Skelton Lake in fifth.
At the bottom of the table, Moto's Bridgwater station scored just 23% with one-star ratings across all categories. Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire was second-worst with 26% and also one star in all categories. Moto owned nine of the bottom 10 stations.
Ken McMeikan, chief executive of Moto Hospitality, defended the company's performance, citing a separate Transport Focus study from summer 2023 that gave Moto a 94% satisfaction score. He said Moto was investing heavily in improvements and would review the issues raised by the Which? panel.
