UK Factory Output Hits Near 4-Year High Amid Supply Woes

Activity in the UK's manufacturing sector has reached its highest level in nearly four years, despite ongoing pressures from the Middle East conflict, according to new data. The S&P Global UK manufacturing PMI survey recorded a reading of 53.7 in April, up from 51 in March, marking the highest level since May 2022. Any reading above 50 indicates growth, while below 50 signals contraction.

Growth Amidst Challenges

Rob Dobson, director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, noted that the growth rate recovered after being impacted by the war in the Middle East during March. The rise in the headline PMI was supported by stronger trends in output and new orders, with staffing levels increasing for the first time in 18 months. Manufacturing production rose for the sixth time in the past seven months, driven by improved new order intakes from both domestic and overseas clients.

Supply Chain Disruptions

Despite the positive growth, the survey highlighted significant pressure on firms due to the conflict. Companies reported worsening delivery delays, shortages of freight capacity, port disruptions, and customs delays. These supply chain issues led to a steep acceleration in price inflation for firms, with input costs rising at the fastest pace since June 2022. As a result, business optimism fell to its lowest level in a year.

Matt Swannell, chief economic adviser to the Item Club, commented that beneath the surface, the manufacturing sector is already feeling the effects of the Middle East conflict. The jump in activity was partly driven by companies building up inventories in anticipation of further supply chain disruption, while there are signs that shipping disruptions are holding back production.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that 717,371 cars and 47,344 commercial vehicles left UK factories over the past year, reflecting the sector's resilience despite external pressures.
